Allgemeinmedizin und evidenzbasierte Versorungsforschung

Interaction: Teaching and research

We find it very important that students learn from case studies and that our teaching content is conveyed based on the findings of high-quality studies. It is imperative that students are taught the methods of evidence-based medicine as they take advantage of opportunities in the basic medicine degree program as well as the General Practice Extension Program and special research modules that we offer. This established knowledge can be applied in the required modules and the electives. In addition, we offer diploma research projects in which our students achieve competence in qualitative and quantitative research methodology with an emphasis on health services research.

External Lecturers

When teaching general medicine, the Institute of General Practice can also draw on a pool of experienced lecturers. Almost all of them run their own practices, some of them are also teaching coordinators and are committed to passing on their knowledge to young colleagues. A current list of external lecturers at the Institute of General Practice and Evidence-based Health Services Research can be found here.

Teaching coordinator

There are currently around 170 teaching practices open to students for completing clinical traineeships and the compulsory "KPJ" in general practice in several federal states. Information on the current certified teaching practices can be found here.
If you run a general practice that is not yet certified as a university teaching practice of the Medical University of Graz, but would like to train students, you can find further information on teaching practices here or please contact us!

Insights into general medicine

General medicine is included in the degree programme in various compulsory courses (Fig. left in black), optionally in other courses such as the dedicated general medicine module SSM 40 (Fig. left in red) and the project "General Medicine, the First Choice" now also offers additional courses (Fig. left in green). The pre-graduate programmes include the new free electives "Insights into General Practice", "Perspectives in General Practice" (mentoring), "Basic Ultrasound in General Practice" and "Research Café/Research meets Practice" as well as General Practice to go, Case Café and 4 weeks of voluntary electives as part of the "Landarztzukunft" project. Since the 2020/21 academic year, there has also been a separate "General Practice" extension programme.

Landarztzukunft

Landarztzukunft

The "Landarztzukunft" project is an initiative of the Institute of General Practice and Evidence-based Health Services Research to counteract the shortage of GPs, which is particularly prevalent in rural areas. It aims to familiarise students with the work of a rural doctor and perhaps even inspire them to do so. The added value of a clinical traineeship or compulsory clinical traineeship as part of the "Landarztzukunft" project is that three to five students live together in free accommodation, share an electric car provided and can take part in leisure activities and training events offered on site.

NEW from 2024: Internship allowance for students of € 650.00 gross as part of the "Landarztzukunft" project.

Postgraduate courses in teaching

This cross-organisational project to make general practice more attractive is intended to get students interested in general practice right from the start of their studies, to enable them to focus on a particular area during their studies and to accompany them on their way into the profession by also offering postgraduate courses, especially for doctors in basic training as well as for doctors training to become general practitioners. IAMEV, Jamö, Stafam, the Dr Wendler teaching practice, KAGes and the Styrian Medical Association are involved in the project, which is financed by the Styrian Health Fund.

The postgraduate programmes include postgraduate mentoring in the form of group discussions (2x/year) or individual mentoring, general practice to go (4x/year), a specialist lecture series on diversity in general practice (2x/year), Fit for Practice (6x/year) and the AM training and further education series (10x/year). On the left is an overview of the distribution of postgraduate programmes throughout the year.
